If you've bought something online recently, chances are you paid no taxes on your purchase.
That doesn't mean you're off the hook, at least as far as the State of Michigan is concerned.
Michigan residents are required to pay sales or use taxes on all purchases made within the state's borders, even if the retailer is online, and based outside the state.
Terry Stanton is Director of Communications for the Department of Treasury. He said if an online retailer doesn't collect use taxes, the liability falls to the purchaser.
"The purchaser is, in the end, responsible for paying the taxes on an item, if the sales tax isn't charged." Stanton said.
Stanton said the tax rate is six percent, and purchases can be reported when filling out your annual tax return. There's a line on the 10-40 form to report such purchases.
Still, many purchases go unreported. Stanton said the state could lose out on about 220 million dollars in tax revenue this year as a result.
