A new report indicates Michigan's poorest families are losing household income at a steeper rate than the wealthiest. The study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finds the bottom fifth of households lost more than 10 percent. Judy Putnam with the Michigan League for Public Policy said lawmakers could help reduce the gap by reinstating the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit at 20 percent of the federal credit

"It helps families have more money in their pockets to meet their basic needs, such as car repairs, catching up on their heating bills. These dollars have a direct positive impact and lift families out of poverty."

Analysts blame Michigan's income gap in part of the shift from well-paying manufacturing jobs to more service jobs, plus sustained unemployment and stagnant minimum wage rates.
