Young people are returning this month to college campuses, one question that parents might be asking is whether or not their child's "stuff" is protected?

According to a survey by a leading nationwide insurance company, only 45 percent of U.S. renters have a renters insurance policy.

Renters insurance is important to have, survey results say, it can help cover losses due to common perils like theft, fire, vandalism and water damage.

Some policies will reimburse renters for the cost to live in a hotel or another rental unit if they're forced out temporarily while repairs are being done.

Joan Schmidt is the Associate Director of Residence Life at Central Michigan University...

"I do think renters insurance is important because of the many belongings that students bring anymore. In the old days they might bring a TV for four people and now so many people have electronics that whether it's a PC or laptop or iPad or a tablet or whatever it might be and those things are pretty easy to lift."

Schmidt said every year they suggest to students to get renters insurance. One of the policies at CMU is it's up to the student to have coverage of their own because the university will not cover any damage that is done to belongings.
