A fallen police officer's family is honoring his service by offering a scholarship to criminal justice students at Ferris State University.
Ryan McCandless was a Ferris State alumni who lost his life in the line of duty while working as a police officer in South Dakota.
To honor his memory and sacrifice McCandless's family created a scholarship in his honor.
Karla Miller is the executive director for the Ferris Foundation. She said creating the scholarship was a team effort among the community.
"There were uhmm I would just say a multitude and I mean a tremendous number of family and friends who contributed to the endowment."
In order to qualify for the scholarship a student must be at least a sophomore, have a 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in the Criminal Justice program.
The scholarship will be offered this coming fall.
