Traverse City environmental cleanup begins next week

Brief traffic delays can be expected along Holiday Road in Traverse City next week, as crews remove contaminated soil and groundwater near GJ's Party Store.

According to Anne Emmington with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the contamination was caused by a leaking underground tank during the 1970s and 80s.

"We are using stimulus money to conduct a cleanup out there," Emmington said. "We're going to de-water the soil, and then we will excavate the area that's contaminated, that's in front of the store and then under Holiday Road."

Emmington said most of the contamination will be cleaned up during the next few weeks.

"We estimate that probably 80 to 90 percent of the contamination will be removed with the efforts that we are doing," she said.

The project will cause more extensive traffic tie-ups the week of September 20th, when Holiday Road will be shutdown in both directions as work is being done.

Detours will be posted.
