Governor Rick Snyder gave his message on transportation and infrastructure to the Legislature Wednesday. Snyder said he wants lawmakers to find one-point-five billion dollars to help fix and maintain Michigan's bridges and roads.

Governor Snyder proposes eliminating the 15-cent retail gas tax in favor of a percentage tax on fuel at the wholesale level. But he said that will only stabilize declining revenue for fixing roads and bridges. He said more money is needed, but he won't give any specific recommendations to lawmakers on how to generate the additional billion-and-a-half dollars needed. He said finding that money is necessary to attract businesses and people.

"We just need more money for our infrastructure, for our roads and bridges."

Snyder said one way to generate a billion dollars in revenue would be to increase driver registration fees by 10 dollars a month per vehicle.

Snyder also said broadband internet is the infrastructure of the future, and Michigan needs to make sure it is available all across the state.
