Governor Rick Snyder said a second international bridge between Detroit and Canada. He told a transportation conference at Michigan State University the bridge could help make Michigan the center of an Upper Midwest rail, air, and trucking system.
The governor said super-fast rail service, an expanded airport complex in southeast Michigan, and a new Detroit-to-Canada bridge could help make the state a key part of the Chicago-to-Toronto and Montreal corridor that accounts for a third of North America's economic activity.
"This is an exciting place to be and we need to market that message."
The governor is still trying to sell the bridge project to Republican lawmakers who remain skeptical of all the assurances that Canada and a private sector partner, not Michigan taxpayers, will bear the financial risk.
