Governor Rick Snyder said making Michigan a so-called "right-to-work" state is not on his agenda. But a Republican lawmaker said the governor may be forced to make a decision on whether to sign a right-to-work bill before the end of the year.
State Representative Mike Shirkey appeared on Michigan Public Television's "Off the Record." He said Michigan deserves an open debate in the Legislature on the issue.
"I'm going to propose that we do it correctly for everybody. Because I believe if it's good for one, it's good for all. I think labor freedom is exactly what this state needs at this time. And now is the right time."
Shirkey said there is data that proves right-too-work states have gained jobs while Michigan has lost them. Unions say they are low-wage jobs that bring down workers' standard of living.
