A 12-year old Cadillac girl is recovering today after being attacked by a black bear last week.
DNR officials said Abby Wetherell was returning from a cabin down a two-track when she spotted the bear and began to run. She was trying to reach some nearby houses.
The bear attacked her. It and was finally driven off by a neighbor.
DNR officials said they it's highly unusual for a bear to attack a human.
They're searching for the animal now. They say there had been no reports of cubs in the area, so there is nothing to indicate that it was an overly protective mother bear.
Ed Golder is a spokesman for the DNR.
"We're searching for the bear. We've got traps out, trying to find the bear. Once we do, we will euthanize it and test it for disease," Golder said.
The girl who was attacked underwent surgery for injuries to her legs. She is reported in stable condition.
