A CMU professor is releasing his prediction today for what the rest of the summer holds in store.

Dr. Ashton Peyrefitte is a faculty member in the department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

For the last 40 or so years, he's studied circulation patterns in the upper atmosphere in the first week of July. He said that is a predictor of temperatures for the rest of the summer.

This summer, he said, will be just a couple degrees below normal

Our normal high is 81 and our normal low is 59, so drop those temperatures off a couple of degrees, and I think we'll be in pretty good shape. I'm not expecting any more than a couple 90-degree days,

"Day to day temperatures are certainly going to vary. We're going to have periods where we're in the upper 80s and other periods where we're down in the 70s. But I don't expect too many 90 degree days," Peyrefitte said.

Peyrefitte said his prediction, which focuses only on temperature, not precipitation, should be accurate until mid August.
