The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared past its all-time record high Tuesday. This is the first time it has set a new record since 2007, before the financial crisis.

Shaun Michael Osborne is a certified financial planner, and co-host of CMU Public Radio's Market Report.

He said the record is more symbolic than anything else.

"I think the big picture is that it's actually not very significant. You know, over the last 117 years of that index's history, the market has continuously broke the record highs. That's why the chart moves up and to the right. On a more short term basis, the long wait that people have had to get back to this point, spurs confidence and diminishes fear when it comes to investing in stocks." Osborne said.

The Dow closed up today 125 points at 14,253. The NASDAQ also reached its highest point since the year 2000.
